Job Description: In partnership with BC Hydro, the City of Abbotsford has an exciting Energy & Climate Action Engineer opportunity for approximately 1 year with possibility for extension. Reporting to the Senior Energy & Climate Action Manager, the Energy & Climate Action Engineer is responsible for reducing corporate energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of civic facilities, utilities, and fleet assets. Working across departments you will identify, evaluate and implement opportunities for GHG emissions reduction across the City’s corporate and community portfolios and pursue relevant grants, rebates and incentives.
Duties: In this key role, you will implement and update the City’s Strategic Energy Management Plan ensuring the City meets annual low carbon electrification and energy targets while advancing associated strategies, plans, policies, and programs. You will liaise with BC Hydro to ensure applicable agreements and program requirements are met. You are skilled at communicating high-level ideas and detailed technical concepts on climate and energy issues. From procurement through contractor management to final reporting, you enjoy stewarding projects from start to finish. You excel in problem solving and multi-tasking, which may involve managing emissions inventories, monitoring key performance indicators, analyzing data, and collaborating on initiatives. You have a mastery of establishing and maintaining effective working relationships across departments as well as with community stakeholders, consultants and utilities.
Educational Requirements: As the ideal candidate, you will possess the following:
• A post-secondary degree in engineering, resource and environmental management, applied science, sustainability, planning, business, or a related professional field (graduate degree preferred), plus minimum of five years of directly related experience or a combination of relevant education and training may be considered.
• A valid professional designation in the Province of BC such as a Professional Engineer (or immediately eligible for registration as a fully qualified professional engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC). Accreditation as a Certified Energy Manager designation by the Association of Energy Engineers considered an asset.
• Advanced training in energy efficiency and/or energy management and familiarity with energy-use tracking and benchmarking
• Familiarity with BC Hydro’s Energy Manager Program, with experience developing and implementing Strategic Energy Management Plans and/or Energy and Emissions Plans.
• Experience with, business case development, report writing, financial analysis, and budget management.
• Ability to complete technical calculations related to carbon emissions, including validation and verification.
• Managing energy or greenhouse gas mitigation projects and/or technology applications.
• Work experience in the public sector or government (municipal preferred) with knowledge of relevant processes and legislation
• Project management (ideally specific to engineering, asset management or environmental management systems)
• Excellent verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, and presentation skills for all levels in an organization
Salary: The salary range for this position is $118,518 - $139,867 per year.
