Job Overview
The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for a regular full-time Trades 1 – Carpenter to join our team of professionals in the Facilities Division, Facilities Operations and Maintenance Department. Reporting to the Facilities Superintendent in this unionized position, you will perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled carpentry work below the journeyman level involving the use of hand or power tools. The successful candidate must have sufficient skill to assist the journeyman carpenters in construction, maintenance and repairs to various municipal interior/exterior surfaces and structures throughout the community.
Responsibilities
• Assist in carpentry construction and repair of municipal buildings and structures including floors, roofs, stairways, doors, windows, scaffolding forms, furniture, gates, fences, ladders, stakes and wedges, door closures and locks
• Perform maintenance/repairs on interior finishes such drywall repairs, painting, T-bar ceilings and flooring
• Assist in identifying general facility maintenance problems and assist in performing necessary repairs
• Install and glazes windows and door glass and perform fibreglassing tasks as required
• Assist skilled trades positions in larger carpentry and mechanical projects
• Sharpen planer and joiner blades and assist in setting and sharpening saws
• Perform other related work as required

Qualifications
• Completion of Grade 10, preferably supplemented by technical courses related to the work and considerable related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Sound knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade
• Sound knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions of the carpentry trade
• Sound knowledge of the use of wood fillers, paints and varnishes
• Ability to assist in construction of specialized wooden structures and perform semi-skilled cabinet making
• Ability to understand sketches and blueprints and follow oral and written instructions accordingly
• Ability to sharpen planer and joiner blades and assist in setting/sharpening saws
• Skill in the use and care of hand and bench tools and related equipment essential to woodworking.
• Knowledge of the Building Code requirements and building envelope systems are considered assets
• Red Seal Carpenter certificate and/or experience in construction and maintenance work is considered an asset
Security Clearance for work at RCMP Buildings is required (not required as part of the application process, however, will be required upon consideration for employment).
Required Certifications/Licenses
Candidates must have the following valid and current certifications/licenses (must be valid at the time the posting closes) and these must be attached with your application.
• BC Class 5 (full-privilege) Driver’s License or equivalent driver’s license for where you reside.
