Job Description:
The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator assists management to achieve an efficient operation in the sewage treatment function of the Operations Department through reliable performance of monitoring and servicing sewage equipment, treatment plant and related equipment, observing and complying with municipal policies and recognized safety practices.

Duties:
The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator will be required to perform a variety of tasks varying in degree of complexity and required knowledge as related to the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation. On weekends and other absences of the Mechanical Operator, the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator shall assist management in equipment repair.

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator will be responsible for the performance of a variety of duties, including but not restricted to:

- Operating the sludge disposal equipment (anaerobic digestors and belt filter press) in an efficient manner;
- Tending aeration equipment;
- Clearing coarse materials and obstructions from screens to maintain correct flow of influent and effluent;
- Removing and cleaning screens;
- Scrubbing processing tanks and walkways;
- Cleaning precipitate, sludge and wash from sumps and tanks;
- Assisting electrical and mechanical operators as required;
- Maintaining cleanliness of plant and grounds;
- Carrying out preventive maintenance procedures/programs;
- Taking samples and performing tests as required; and updating records and logs as required.

You will be required to perform standby duty with emergency pagers as required, at the direction of the supervisor, and report all suspected defects in the operation. You will be required to perform other related duties as assigned.

Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision in accordance with established routine and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Supervisor III - Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Educational Requirements:
Must have completed grade 12 education;

Must possess a Wastewater Treatment Level I Certificate; and,

Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Driver's Licence;
Skill Requirements:
Sound knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures used in treatment plant operations;

Able to understand the principles of the functions and operation and to apply the techniques of tending and maintaining sewage processing and sludge disposal equipment;

Able to work in wet or humid conditions while subject to odours, fumes and gases;

Sound knowledge of routine duties and able to perform with a minimum of supervision;

Knowledgeable in the monitoring of electrical and mechanical control panels and gauges;

Good knowledge in electrical and mechanical maintenance repair and preventive maintenance programs;

Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors and other members of staff;

Able to relate to the public and be neat and presentable in appearance.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
You will work any five consecutive days within the hours as prescribed in publicized shift schedules and on occasion work overtime as authorized. You must be of good health to work outdoors regardless of weather and under conditions of gases, fumes and odours. You must wear safety equipment as appropriate to the performance of duties. Upon hiring, you will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
