Job Description: Employees in this position are responsible for assisting the parks maintenance supervisor with planning, designing and implementing maintenance programs for sports fields, irrigation systems and landscape areas.
Duties: Designing, installing and maintaining flowers, shrubs and median beds; assisting the supervisor in the preparation of annual and seasonal work plans for assigned areas; performing hands-on maintenance work; assisting with a variety of urban forestry duties for parks, green spaces and street trees. You will also provide technical guidance and direction to parks employees and volunteers in the proper maintenance and care of shrubs, trees, flowers and groundcovers. Seasonally, you will help maintain Mission???s parks cutting grass, weeding and trimming
Educational Requirements: Grade 12 (or equivalent), supplemented by completion of a certificate or diploma in a recognized turf management or horticulture program (or a related field) or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Pesticide Applicator???s License. Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
Skill Requirements: Sound knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in turf maintenance and the care of athletic fields.

Sound knowledge of irrigation systems, including routine maintenance, programming, trouble shooting and minor repairs.

Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in performing horticulture and landscaping tasks.

Knowledge of the hazards and safe work practices and standards applicable to the work performed.

Ability to design, install and maintain landscape features such as planting beds, medians, planters and hanging baskets.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts, and to communicate tactfully and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to use a variety of computer software and office equipment related to the work.

Ability to work with minimum supervision.

Skill in using a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to the work.

Sufficient physical condition, strength and stamina to perform the required duties in all weather conditions.

Minimum of one year experience in general parks or grounds maintenance, horticulture or arboriculture work, including experience in the programming, maintenance and repairing of irrigation systems.

Experience with the maintenance and operation of a variety of landscape related equipment.
Salary: $31.91 per hour plus a comprehensive benefit package upon completion of the probationary period including the Municipal Pension Plan (MPP). The shift is Wednesday to Saturday (four days per week) from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm (nine-hour shifts).
