Job Description: You will assist management to achieve efficient janitorial services to all public facilities through reliable performance of supervision, janitorial tasks, monitoring contracts for janitorial services, ensuring compliance and performing general routine maintenance in accordance with established municipal policies and safety practices.

Duties: As a first line supervisor, you will be responsible for staff supervision, monitoring contracts for janitorial services and performing general routine maintenance at all facilities; training, disciplining and evaluating performance of subordinates; assigning work of subordinates ensuring satisfactory completion; preparing and implementing shift schedules in consultation with the Superintendent; assessing performance and acceptability of equipment and supplies, preparing written reports as required. You will be responsible for equipment and materials assigned; organizing labour and materials; ensuring all acceptable and reasonable safety measures are taken to protect personnel, equipment, materials and the public from injury or damage. As a secondary responsibility, you will be required to perform janitorial duties as required or directed during peak periods or during unusual circumstances. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the preventive maintenance program and that all facilities are maintained at a high standard of "housekeeping"; ensuring that repairs and maintenance of equipment is completed; ensuring equipment is in proper working order and used by subordinates in an acceptable manner; ensuring adequate stocks of material and supplies are maintained; issuing and requisitioning supplies and materials as required. You will be responsible for monitoring the performance of contractors; reviewing the standard of work performed on a regular basis; recommending changes, alterations, etc., to janitorial contracts. The incumbent will be required to perform other related duties as assigned. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Superintendent of Recreation Facilities.
Educational Requirements: -Must have completed grade 10 and the Building Services Worker course of a recognized vocational institution - OR - the equipment combination of training and experience;

-Must have completed a formal training course in effective supervision and have a minimum of two (2) years experience in a supervisory role;
Skill Requirements: -Superior knowledge of the methods, procedures, principles, practices, equipment and materials used in janitorial work;

-Able to maintain records and prepare and present reports, both orally and in written format;

-Able to establish effective work schedules;

-Able to exhibit courtesy, tact and diplomacy in dealing with the public and be neat in appearance;

-Able to understand verbal and written instructions in English, complete required forms and perform all facets of simple mathematics;

-Able to plan, direct and supervises the work of subordinates;

-Able to recognize and rectify and/or report upon actual and potential safety hazards;

-Able to lift and carry heavy objects;

-Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with department officials and other members of the staff;

-Able to operate, maintain and make minor repairs to equipment;

-Must possess a valid B.C. Driver's Licence.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

You will be required to work any consecutive five days within a calendar week and conform to the hours of work as prescribed in published schedules and on occasion, work overtime as authorized. You must be of good health to work outdoors regardless of weather. You will be required to work at any municipally owned facility and must wear equipment as appropriate to the performance of duties. Travel will be required in the performance of duties. You will, upon hiring, have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Salary:
$26.15 to 30.76 per hour (2017)
