Job Description: Employees in this position are responsible for assisting the supervisor with a variety of technical and clerical duties pertaining to reviewing and processing building construction and renovation plans and applications.

This entry-level position will involve public relations contact which requires the exercise of independent judgment, action, tact and diplomacy.
Duties: Review of proposed building designs, materials, and devices for compliance with related bylaws, regulations and code.

Coordinate the processing of applications though relevant municipal departments to ensure all necessary approvals and recommendations are obtained; accept, or reject proposed building construction plans.

Provide information to the public on technical, regulatory, and Building Code requirements to clarify problem areas, interpret and explain requirements and make suggestions for revisions to ensure plans conform to requirements.

Prepare related correspondence and reports; maintain various records, files and maps and performs clerical tasks related to the work.

Complete applications for building permits, sewer, water and storm drains to code requirements.

Answer public inquiries and refer problems to supervisor.

Perform other related duties as required.
Educational Requirements: Completion of Grade 12, with a Diploma or Certificate in Building Technology or similar discipline plus some related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Valid Class 5 driver's licence.
Skill Requirements: Knowledge of relevant regulations such as the British Columbia Building Code, British Columbia Plumbing Code, District bylaws, policies and regulations regarding development, construction, alteration and repair of buildings and structures.

Knowledge and understanding of construction methods and materials.

Demonstrated ability to read and interpret building construction plans and drawings.
Ability to establish and maintain relationships with municipal staff, architects, developers, tradesmen, contractors, engineers, and other internal and external contacts.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to use tact when dealing effectively with members of the public.

Demonstrated technical writing skills.

Strong customer service skills.

Basic computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets and other municipal software
Salary: $30.51 per hour + 4% in lieu of benefits
Additional Information: We also offer a 9-day fortnight schedule (extended hours for 9 days and 1 day off every two weeks).
