Our Communications staff play a critical role in assisting the public, responding to 911 and routine calls, as well as dispatching of officers in response to calls for service. This is all done in a fast-paced, high-energy environment. Working in a team, successful applicants need to be able to think independently, apply sound judgment, and maintain professionalism and tact while responding promptly to stressful situations.

Our Communications Centre is operational 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Successful candidates will work a variety of shifts including days, evenings, weekends and statutory holidays. After a training period of full-time hours, our Casual Communications Operators are expected to work shifts that are scheduled in advance or are short notice call outs.
Duties: As a Communications Operator, you are the first point of contact to the public. You will respond to various types of calls, determining the nature, priority and resources required for each. You will be eliciting details from callers while entering pertinent, time-sensitive information into computer systems, requiring a superior level of multi-tasking and customer service. As well, you will be required to coordinate responses to calls for service with other emergency services stakeholders to provide exemplary service to the community.
Skill Requirements: Successful applicants must:

??? Have completed Grade 12, supplemented by related training and experience
??? Have an accurate typing speed of 45 WPM (words per minute)
??? Be able to pass testing including: typing, data entry, audio memory retention, spelling, prioritization, map reading and decision making.
??? Have an Audiogram completed within the last 12-months indicating hearing loss no greater than 30db in both ears in the 500-3000 HZ range is required.
??? Be able to secure and maintain an enhanced security clearance (this will be administered by the Abbotsford Police and will include a polygraph test.)


Knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, the Motor Vehicle Act and City of Abbotsford Bylaws is considered an asset, as is considerable geographical knowledge of the City of Abbotsford.
Salary: Hourly wage with 12% in lieu of vacation and benefits.
