| Job Description: |
Our Planning Department is looking to hire an energetic and motivated Planner. Employees in this mid-level professional Planner position perform a variety of community planning functions applying their sound knowledge of planning theory, and community development land use concepts and policy planning issues.
They are responsible to: coordinate and process a range of development land use, subdivision and permit applications; prepare reports for Council with recommendations regarding the approval process; research, analyze, prepare and conduct intermediate planning studies and research projects; as required develop projections and plans for industrial, commercial, residential and other areas of land use; liaise with municipal and other government agencies as required; provide information and respond to queries from internal and external sources; establish and maintain data bases for the department, including population, lot inventory, housing, development project status, and land use information; and prioritize work to comply with departmental schedules and deadlines. While considerable independent judgment is authorized for the performance of tasks within established guidelines, more complex situations are reviewed with the supervisor to determine appropriate action. |

| Duties: |
Responding to inquiries concerning land use issues from the public and other government agencies;
Processing land-use development applications (e.g. re-zonings, development permits and subdivisions);
Preparing related reports and recommendations for advisory bodies and Council;
Research and preparation of varied planning studies and preparing departmental reports, maps and other graphic materials;
While considerable independence of judgment is authorized, many situations are reviewed with the supervisor to determine the appropriate action.

| Educational Requirements: |
A Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Community Planning or related field and have significant knowledge and application of local government bylaws and provincial planning legislation. |
|
| Skill Requirements: |
Minimum of 2 years experience in a municipal planning environment at a Planning Technician level or higher, or recognized equivalent, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
Be familiar with hands-on computer applications;
Sound knowledge of planning theory, site design, land use concepts and policy planning issues;
Sound knowledge and understanding of provincial legislation and a comprehensive understanding of municipal bylaws and policies relating to land use;
Ability to research, prepare reports and recommendations on a variety of land use planning issues;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts and to communicate tactfully and effectively, both verbally and in writing;
Membership or eligible for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners;
Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.

| Salary: |
The hourly rate for this full-time CUPE position is $35.39 with a comprehensive benefit package upon successful completion of probation. |
|
| Additional Information: |
This position works a 35 hour work week with a nine-day fortnight schedule (an extra day off every two weeks).
