Job Description: The City of Surrey is a place of innovative transformation and accelerated growth—where the future is limitless and possibilities are endless. If you are excited about helping to build the city of tomorrow—and you share our values of integrity, service, teamwork, innovation and community—join us, today.

The City of Surrey has partnered with BC Hydro to create an exciting, legacy-building opportunity. The Community Energy Manager will create the foundation for a profound reduction in energy consumption and emissions community-wide in the City of Surrey and initiate catalytic action towards transition to more sustainable energy systems.

This position will further the City’s work on sustainable energy systems, including district energy systems and distributed generation, particularly as it relates to opportunities in City Centre and the City of Surrey Civic Centre Development. Other key deliverables include a reduction in the use of grid-supplied energy (including electricity) and fossil fuels in the community, promotion of BC Hydro Power Smart programs to community businesses and residential members, and implementation of the energy and climate change objectives of the Surrey Sustainability Charter and the Official Community Plan.

You will require either a degree in Sustainability or Resource Management (graduate degree preferred or supplemented by professional designation), Registered Professional Engineer, Certified Energy Manager, Registered Planner or a Masters designation in a related business field with a minimum of five years’ experience working as an Energy and/or Sustainability specialist. Any of the following additional accreditation is also desirable: Certified Energy manager (CEM) designation through the Association of Energy Engineers, Energy efficiency training such as CIET Energy Management Training Course and/or LEED professional accreditation.

Your proven capability in project management, community engagement, and collaborative initiatives that demonstrate excellence in leadership, communication, analysis, building capacity, teamwork and implementation skills are critical to success in this position. Substantive knowledge in the field of community energy and carbon management is required, as is experience with local government processes and relevant legislation and bylaws.

Please note that, due to the shared funding arrangement with BC Hydro, your application for this position will be shared, in confidence, with the BC Hydro Community Energy Manager Project contact.
